FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Chukum?
Chukum is a tree, the Havardia Albicans, native to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
Its “Chukum water” comes from a natural resin found in the bark, which naturally sheds from the tree. It’s collected through artisanal methods that don’t harm or cut the tree.
The Chukum finish is 100% natural, made by mixing the base white cement and limestone powder from the same region, then blending them with chukum water resin. Creating a fully natural, handcrafted finish with a warm, organic look.
Is Herente authentic Chukum?
Yes. Both the Chukum base and the Chukum water we use come directly from the Yucatan Peninsula.
There are products on the market labeled “Chukum-style” or “Chukum-color,” but these are imitations. They may look similar, but they don’t offer the same qualities or the sensory, emotional feel of true, natural Chukum.
How should the surface be prepared to apply Chukum in a pool?
Chukum must be applied over cement-based surfaces coated with rough stucco or plaster so the material can bond properly.
How should the surface be prepared to apply Chukum on walls and ceilings?
Chukum doesn’t allow for patching or spot repairs. Since it’s a finish applied as the last layer, all installations (especially electrical) must be completed beforehand to avoid opening the wall later.
If the wall is opened after the application, the entire surface will need to be redone.
Can Chukum be tinted in different colors?
We offer three signature shades: traditional, gray, and mayan cream.
For pools, Chukum water must be used. Even when choosing traditional or gray, the natural resin will give the finish soft pink undertones that are characteristic of Chukum.
For walls and ceilings, we can work within the warm, sandy palette typical of the material.
Gray Chukum can be made lighter or darker to achieve the exact shade you’re looking for.
If your project needs different colors, get in touch so we can review the options and find the right fit with you.
Is Chukum waterproof?
Not exactly. Chukum is a final finish, not a replacement for waterproofing.
However, unlike most finishes, it does have natural water-resistant properties.
If moisture appears inside a wall, Chukum may change in tone and hold the humidity, but the material will not detach.
Does Chukum help cool down a space?
There’s no formal evidence, but its naturally light tones can help reflect sunlight, which may contribute to a fresher feel.
